Medway Council published details of the next draft of their Local Plan, which will go to Medway's Cabinet for approval next Tuesday (6 March). Public consultation will begin on 16 March. (The Local Plan is the document which sets out the future course for Medway until 2035, and puts lines on the map where new housing will be favoured).

If Cabinet approves it, the Strategy has four different scenarios for the public to comment on, all of which include allocating Deangate Ridge (owned by Medway Council). All rely on Hoo becoming a large rural town, and effectively joining up with Chattenden.

All four include extensive development in High Halstow and Allhallows (and a small amount at Grain). Three include development at Stoke. The fourth also includes much of the SSSI at Lodge Hill.

This is not to say that there should be no development on the Peninsula. There is a clear need for housing in Medway. But it must be fair, proportionate, and sustainable. And the process must be clear and democratic, rather than foisted on us, or slipped in the back door like Deangate.

This of course make our Deangate petition and opportunity to be heard on the 12th March extremely important as our next step before the Local Plan consultation starts. Please, please make sure 12th March, St Georges Centre (opposite the Historic Dockyard), 6.30pm is firmly a date you cannot miss.

Numbers of support will be crucial...
